Chemical Peels 101: A Beginner's Guide to Smoother, Brighter Skin
The phrase "chemical peel" can sound intimidating, but these treatments are among the most versatile and effective tools in skincare. From light peels that brighten your complexion during a lunch break to deeper peels that address significant sun damage, there's a chemical peel for virtually every skin concern and comfort level.
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel uses a solution — typically an acid — applied to the skin to remove damaged outer layers. As those layers shed, the newer skin beneath is smoother, more even-toned, and healthier. Think of it as accelerated exfoliation that goes beyond what any scrub or at-home product can achieve.
Types of Chemical Peels
Light (superficial) peels use mild acids like glycolic or lactic acid and penetrate only the outermost layer of skin. They're perfect for treating mild discoloration, roughness, and dullness with virtually no downtime. Medium peels use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and reach the middle layers of skin, effectively addressing age spots, fine lines, and moderate discoloration. Recovery takes about a week. Deep peels penetrate the lower middle layer and produce the most dramatic results for deep wrinkles and significant sun damage, but require more substantial downtime.
What Can Chemical Peels Treat?
Chemical peels are remarkably effective for sun damage and age spots, fine lines and early wrinkles, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation, mild acne and acne scarring, rough skin texture, and enlarged pores. The specific peel formulation is chosen based on your primary concern.
What to Expect
During a light peel, you'll feel a mild tingling or warmth that lasts a few minutes. Medium peels may cause a stinging sensation. Afterward, skin may feel tight and look pink. With light peels, you might notice some flaking over the next few days. Medium peels involve more visible peeling that typically resolves within a week.
How to Prepare
Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating products 5-7 days before your peel. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. If you've had cold sores, let your provider know — certain peels can trigger an outbreak. Come to your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin.
Building a Peel Program
One peel can give you a noticeable refresh, but a series of peels produces the best results. For light peels, we often recommend a series of 4-6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart. This progressive approach allows each session to build on the last, gradually transforming your skin without aggressive downtime.
