Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect Before, During & After

·Anzhelika, Laser & More

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments worldwide, and for good reason. It offers a long-term solution to unwanted hair that shaving, waxing, and plucking simply can't match. But if you've never had a session before, the unknown can feel intimidating. Here's everything you need to know.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

The laser emits a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in your hair follicles. This energy converts to heat, which damages the follicle enough to significantly slow future growth. Because the laser targets pigment, it works best on dark hair against lighter skin — though modern technology has expanded the range of skin tones that can be treated safely.

Before Your Session

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least two weeks before treatment. Shave the treatment area the day before (not the day of) — the laser needs the hair root intact beneath the skin, but surface hair should be gone. Skip waxing or plucking for at least four weeks beforehand, since those methods remove the root the laser needs to target.

What Happens During Treatment

Your technician will clean the area and may apply a cooling gel. You'll wear protective eye shields. The laser handpiece is pressed against your skin and activated — most people describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band flick. Modern devices have built-in cooling systems that make the process much more comfortable than older technology.

Aftercare Tips

Expect mild redness and slight swelling for a few hours — this is normal. Apply aloe vera or a gentle moisturizer. Avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 hours. Use SPF 30+ on treated areas that are exposed to sunlight. Hair will appear to grow over the next 1-2 weeks, but this is actually the treated hair shedding from the follicle.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Most people need 6-8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only target follicles in the active growth phase. Multiple sessions ensure you catch every follicle during its growth cycle. After completing your series, most clients see 80-90% permanent hair reduction.
